Virtual Teaming

Composite Applications Portal
for Virtual Teams

From http://www.bioteams.com/2005/04/06/bioteaming_a_manifesto.html

What problems do Virtual Teams face?

  1. Technology adoption - learning new technology tools, especially when these diverge greatly from familiar metaphors and interfaces.

  2. Changing habits - adopting new ways of working, sharing and co-operating among project team members requires open-mindedness, patience and structure. It just doesn't happen automatically.

  3. Accountability issues - remaining committed and responsible for assignments and responsibilities may require analysis and reframing of how people share information about their work and how they can introduce a systemic high-level of transparency in it.

  4. Team mobilisation - the ability to maintain all of the team highly motivated and tightly involved is a critical factor is virtual team success.

  5. Overfocus on Technology and Process instead of achievement of results.

  6. Complexity - multiple enterprises, multiple working locations, busy manager/director/owners , mixed relationship histories, hidden agendas, technology illiteracy, etc.

  7. Limited access - limited access to technology or the Internet infrastructure.

  8. High mobility - working in many locations (including their cars!) and may only be able to meet physically once or twice a month.

  9. Balance of power - traditional hierarchies or collaborative cooperation? How to shift from the old to the new?

  10. Multicultural Issues - Business-related cultural issues.
